歌曲最初是曲作者Desmond Child为Bonnie Tyler填写了不同歌词的歌曲If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)。由于Desmond Child并不满意歌曲在美国和英国的成功，他就与Jon Bon Jovi和Richie Sambora重新创作了这首You Give Love a Bad Name。
